José Diaz

José Diaz is a Brooklyn native whose intellectual and photographic interests rests within the act of documenting. His work has been influenced through his adoptive family’s involvement in the game of Stickball in El Barrio, East Harlem. NY. José’s photography explores time, space and race relations within El Barrio through overlaying archival and contemporary images. He is currently interested in documenting divergent pathways, in particular, people who are transitioning out of the carceral system. As a person who has served 11 years in New York State prisons, he recognizes that even though one may be in the same prison and have similar opportunities, our journey takes divergent pathways at the opening of a prison gate. José seeks to explore and document this phenomenon.
