Don O. Jones

Don Ike Jones is a dynamic artist and community advocate based in Philadelphia. Born in Anderson, South Carolina, he moved to Philadelphia at the age of seven, where he began to navigate the complexities of urban life. Drawing inspiration from his experiences, Ike’s work often reflects themes of resilience, transformation, and social justice.

Ike’s artistic journey took a significant turn during his time in incarceration. Initially, he had never considered photography as a medium, but when the organization providing photography services at Graterford Prison dissolved, he and his fellow members of the NAACP branch were presented with an opportunity. As president of the Graterford branch, Ike agreed to take over the photo project, advocating for a switch from Polaroid to digital cameras. With no prior experience with digital photography, he embraced the challenge, conducting research and purchasing Kodak cameras and printers.

Through hands-on practice, Ike quickly became proficient with the equipment and began teaching fellow inmates the art of photography. He initially worked with older men who had left the streets when Polaroids were popular, but soon welcomed younger cameramen who introduced new techniques and insights. This collaborative environment ignited Ike’s passion for photography, and he avidly captured images until his release.

Since his reentry, Ike has focused on community advocacy, co-founding initiatives like GROWN (Gaining Respect Over Our Worst Night) to support individuals reentering society. He has also worked as a violence interrupter and crime intervention specialist for the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, using his platform to advocate for peace and community restoration. Now, as an artist, Ike channels his life experiences into his photography, creating pieces that resonate with themes of hope, resilience, and the power of community. His commitment to social justice and artistic expression continues to inspire those around him, making him a vital voice in the Philadelphia arts scene.
